Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is designed to reshape and reposition the ears for a more balanced and proportionate look. Our board certified plastic surgeons can reduce the appearance of prominent ears and ears that stick out too far from the sides of the head. Many people experience conditions with the ears that make them feel very self-conscious about their appearance. Ear surgery can effectively improve these issues and create a better balance between the face and ears.

Benefits of Ear Surgery
Otoplasty can be performed for patients old and young (as long as the ears have stopped growing), and the benefits of the procedure can be both physical and physcological. Depending on your unique needs, ear surgery can often help:
- Decrease the size of the ears
- Reshape the ears for improved proportion and symmetry
- Pin back or reposition protruding ears
- Improve balance between the ears and face
In addition to aesthetic benefits, the majority of patients report renewed self-confidence and esteem following ear surgery. This is particularly apparent among younger patients who are currently in or about to begin their formative years of schooling and/or extracurricular activities.
The Ear Surgery Procedure
At 740 Park Plastic Surgery, our Harvard-trained surgeons customize otoplasty based on the unique needs of each individual. During the procedure, small incisions will generally be concealed in the natural crease behind the ear. Through these incisions, cartilage is carefully reshaped and/or removed until the desired size and contour is achieved. If necessary, the ears can then be pinned back using tiny sutures also placed behind the ears. Ear surgery can be performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on the age of the patient and complexity of the operation. On average, the entire procedure takes approximately one hour to complete, and patients are typically able to return home under the care and supervision of a close friend or family member.
Ear Surgery Recovery and Results
Most patients will need to wear a head wrap for a few days after ear surgery, followed by a special headband to protect the ears while healing. Dr. Broumand or Dr. Maman will advise you to take protection measures against potential injury or extreme temperatures for a few months after ear surgery. Light activity can often be undertaken one day after the procedure, and most adults can usually return to non-strenuous work within about five to seven days. Likewise, children can also typically return to school after about five to seven days. The results of ear surgery are immediately noticeable once the protective headwrap is removed.
