The art of plastic surgery

Facelift

A more youthful, vibrant, and refreshed appearance can be achieved with a facelift. This cosmetic enhancement option is one of the most effective procedures available for those of us experiencing pronounced signs of age and fatigue of the face and neck. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we simply cannot overcome the effects that the environment, heredity, and the natural process of aging can have on our skin. All of these factors can lead to a number of aesthetic issues, including deep wrinkles, jowls, excess neck skin and inelasticity in the skin, which can ultimately make people look older than they really are. Fortunately, facelift surgery from our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Daniel Maman and Dr. Stafford Broumand, can take years off your appearance and smooth your facial skin with results that look natural and beautiful.

Benefits of Facelift Surgery

Designed to comprehensively rejuvenate the facial region, facelift surgery can be customized to address a number of concerns attributed to age, genetics, and various environmental factors. Depending on your specific needs and goals, facelift surgery may be able to help:

  • Smooth moderate to deep lines, wrinkles, creases, and skin folds
  • Tighten lax, sagging skin of the face, neck, and jawline
  • Reduce excess fat accumulation(s) in the cheeks, jowls, and neck
  • Add volume to the cheeks, midface, and/or other areas of face
  • Tighten muscle band laxity of the neck

As an added benefit, facelift incisions can generally be made in discreet locations hidden from view, and our plastic surgeons’ careful technique helps to ensure you achieve beautiful, natural-looking results without a “pulled” or “operated-on” appearance.

Facelift Candidates

Facelift surgery can be a great solution for many men and women who have aesthetic concerns relating to both the face and neck. Good candidates for this procedure are generally those who:

  • Have moderate to significant lines, folds, and/or creases in the face and neck
  • Have excess and/or displaced pockets of stubborn fat in the face and neck
  • Have loose, extra skin caused by aging and/or dramatic weight loss
  • Have evident volume loss in areas such as the cheeks and midface
  • Desire results that last longer than cosmetic injectables and other nonsurgical options

Along with having one or more of these concerns, facelift candidates should be in good overall health and have no medical issues that are currently unmanaged. Individuals who smoke cigarettes and/or use tobacco products must stop at least two weeks prior to surgery, ideally without planning to resume these habits in the future. During your consultation at 740 Park Plastic Surgery, your doctor will discuss all of these qualifications in detail to make certain facelift surgery would be the most beneficial option for you at this time.

Facelift Surgery Considerations

A facelift is considered by many to be the most comprehensive facial rejuvenation treatment available. While this popular procedure can achieve dramatic facial and neck enhancement results for qualified candidates, there are certain limitations that should be understood prior to proceeding with surgery.

One limitation that needs to be considered is the forehead and brow area. Although this region makes up about one-third of the face, it is not directly affected by facelift surgery. Consequently, individuals who are also seeking to minimize lines and folds between the brow and across the forehead may find that combining their facelift with a brow lift would be the best approach. Likewise, a facelift does not address the eyes directly, so patients interested in resolving upper and/or lower eyelid concerns might also want to consider blepharoplasty as a complementary procedure.

Another aspect to think about prior to surgery is how long facelift results will endure. For the majority of women and men, the effects of treatment typically last anywhere from seven to ten years, after which a touch-up treatment like cosmetic injections may be desired. Elements that can shorten the lifespan of facelift results include cigarette smoking, sun overexposure, frequent stress, dramatic weight changes, and simply one’s genetic makeup.

The Facelift Procedure

At our practice, Dr. Broumand and Dr. Maman custom-tailor facelift surgery based on the particular needs and goals of each individual. During the operation, small incisions will generally be concealed in the hairline and around the ear, and underlying facial tissues and muscles will be gently tightened. The skin is then carefully re-draped, and any excess is removed. If necessary, micro fat transfers can also be administered to help restore lost volume in targeted areas. On average, the entire procedure takes about two hours to complete, and patients are typically able to return home under the supervision of a friend or family member on the day of their operation.

Facelift Recovery and Results

Some bruising and swelling can be expected following the facelift procedure; however, any discomfort during recovery can be alleviated with medication. Dr. Broumand will recommend that you avoid strenuous activities for several days after surgery. Most patients can get back to normal daily routines within about 10 days. Any residual scarring from facelift surgery should be virtually undetectable since the incisions are well hidden along the hairline and around the ears. Once the recovery period is complete, you should notice much smoother, firmer skin that looks fresh and revitalized.
