Breast Reduction

Many women are affected by breasts that are simply too large for their body frame, which can cause feelings of physical discomfort and self-consciousness about their appearance. Breast reduction surgery from our board-certified plastic surgeons can reduce the size of the breasts for more balanced proportions. This effective procedure can help women who suffer from many symptoms caused by having overly large breasts, including problems fitting into desired clothing, bra-strap indentations, lack of self-confidence, and pain in the upper body. With breast reduction surgery, Dr. Daniel Maman and Dr. Stafford Broumand can decrease the size of your breasts with results that are significantly more proportionate and that can ultimately enhance your overall appearance.

Benefits of a Breast Reduction

While diminishing the overall size and weight of the breasts are certainly key benefits of treatment, breast reduction surgery can also provide a number of other advantages. Based on your unique needs and desires, this procedure can help:

  • Raise the breast mound
  • Create a rounder breast shape
  • Elevate the position of the nipple-areolar complexes
  • Reduce the size of the areolas

Along with these aesthetic changes to the breasts, breast reduction may also help reduce the physical and/or emotional discomfort associated with certain recreational activities, as well as make finding articles of clothing that fit properly a bit easier.

Breast Reduction Candidates

In addition to decreasing the size of the breasts while enhancing their appearance, breast reduction surgery can help diminish or even eliminate several complications often related to overly large breasts. Generally speaking, good candidates for this procedure are those who suffer from one or more of the following issues:

  • Persistent back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Chronic headaches extending from the forehead to the back of the neck
  • Painful indentations caused by bra strap pressure
  • Irritating rashes underneath the breasts
  • Poor posture

Furthermore, breast reduction candidates should be in good overall health with no uncontrolled medical conditions. Individuals who smoke and/or use tobacco products must quit doing so at least two weeks before surgery, ideally with the intention of never resuming these habits. Lastly, patients should have realistic expectations for what can and cannot be accomplished with breast reduction surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Broumand or Dr. Maman will thoroughly review all qualifications to determine proper candidacy.

Breast Reduction Considerations

Like all surgical procedures, performing a breast reduction requires incisions, which inevitably results in some degree of postoperative scarring. That said, our plastic surgeons make every effort to minimize the final appearance of breast scars by employing advanced incision methods and scar management techniques.

The incisional pattern typically used by our doctors during surgery encircles the areola and continues down the underside of the breasts to the inframammary fold. In contrast to other approaches, the incision rarely extends horizontally along the crease below the breasts, consequently producing a shorter scar. After breast reduction, patients are instructed to utilize special tension-offloading silicone strips to help reduce undue stress on the incision lines as they heal. Not only does this aid in the healing process, it also helps create a less conspicuous scar.

In the end, any possible scarring from breast reduction surgery can generally be covered by the majority of underwear and swimsuit styles, and most women note that the final outcome of the procedure significantly outweighs any apprehensions they may have about visible scarring.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

At our practice, our board certified plastic surgeons generally utilize a “lollipop” incision made around the circumference of the areola and extending down to the inframammary crease underneath the breast. Excess fat and breast tissue will be removed, as well as any excess skin. Remaining skin and breast tissue will be elevated and recontoured until the desired outcome is achieved, and the incisions will then be carefully closed for optimal healing. Typically performed under general anesthesia, the entire breast reduction procedure takes approximately two hours to complete, though this will vary based on each patient’s unique needs.

Breast Reduction Recovery and Results

After breast reduction surgery, patients can expect some temporary bruising and swelling in the treatment areas. Any discomfort can be controlled with medication. You will need to wear a supportive bra for a very short time after the procedure in order to facilitate the healing process. Heavy lifting and strenuous activities should be avoided for about four weeks following breast reduction surgery, though most patients are able to return to normal daily routines after about one week. Any potential scarring can generally be concealed by most articles of clothing, including several bikini and bra varieties. Breast reduction surgery has helped millions of women feel more comfortable and more confident in the way they look.

Dr. Broumand has absolutely changed my life for the best. I had a breast reduction about 2 years ago and I haven’t been the same since. As a smaller girl with tremendous breasts that didn’t fit my body, I spent my entire youth and early adulthood hating the way I looked, covering up, and hiding under big clothes. Dr. Broumand and his entire team made me super comfortable during the entire process, and the results were far beyond my expectations. I have no noticeable scars, I can wear anything I would like and I no longer cower behind my large bras. My new found confidence and happiness was instantly noticeable, and I wound up meeting my future husband right after I had fully recovered. The surgery was the best thing I’ve ever done and I’d do it all over again! Thank you so much Dr. Broumand and team for such an incredible life change!
