Breast Augmentation

Many women who are dissatisfied with the size of their breasts and the effect they have on their overall body proportions may find that breast augmentation can help them achieve their goals. Breast augmentation is designed to help a patient enhance the size, shape, and curvature of the breast. This procedure can add volume and definition to the breasts with results that look natural. With breast augmentation, Dr. Stafford Broumand and Dr. Daniel Maman can give you more youthful, sensual-looking breasts and enhance your self-confidence with new, beautiful breast contours.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

For women interested in improving the overall size and appearance of their breasts, an augmentation with implants can often prove to be an ideal solution. Depending on your unique needs and desires, breast augmentation may be able to help:

  • Enhance breast size and fullness
  • Improve breast contour and curvature
  • Restore lost breast volume
  • Correct size discrepancies and/or other breast asymmetries

In addition to these benefits, breast augmentation can also help rejuvenate your figure for a more youthful physique, as well as improve the fit and/or look of many bras, blouses, and swimsuit varieties.

Breast Augmentation Considerations

There are a number of different elements that can impact the final results of a breast augmentation. Below are simply a few of the key considerations that will be discussed in complete detail at the time of your consultation.

Breast Implant Options

There are many choices you have when it comes to deciding the type, size, and shape of breast implants that will ultimately have the best possible effect on your appearance. For those undergoing a breast augmentation, 740 Park Plastic Surgery offers saline, traditional silicone, and cohesive silicone gel “gummy bear” implant options. During your initial consultation with one of our surgeons, he will go over all of your choices with you, showing you the different types of breast implants available and answering any questions you may have. At this meeting, you and your surgeon will decide the best option for your goals.

Breast Implant Placement

Breast implants can be placed in three different locations: above the chest muscle (subglandular), underneath the chest muscle (submuscular), or a combination of both (dual plane). While each position can produce an excellent outcome for the right individuals, Dr. Maman and Dr. Broumand typically prefer the dual plane method. This technique often yields the benefits of both subglandular and submuscular placement – it enhances durability in the lower pole of the breast while creating a more natural-looking upper pole breast slope and improved coverage of soft tissue over the edge of the implant. At the time of your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the pros and cons of all three options in great detail, helping you select the best implant placement for your specific needs and goals.

Breast Augmentation Incisions

Our doctors offer two breast augmentation incision options: periareolar and transaxillary. The periareolar incision is made at the base of the areola, hidden where the breast’s normal skin color meets the darker pigment of the nipple-areolar complex. The postoperative scar for this approach is generally short in length and relatively inconspicuous once fully healed. The transaxillary incision is made in the crease of the armpit, providing the benefit of creating no visible scarring on the actual breasts. Due to the location of this incision, any postoperative scarring tends to remain well concealed. Both periareolar and transaxillary incisions have unique advantages and disadvantages for every patient, all of which will be thoroughly covered by your surgeon during the consultation.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

A breast augmentation begins with incisions that are made at the base of the areola or near the underarm crease. These incisions are small and will be virtually indistinguishable following your recovery. After the incisions are made, the implant of your choice will be inserted and placed below or on top of the breast muscle. Once the breast implants are in place, the incisions will be closed with small sutures.

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia and can be completed on an outpatient basis. Following surgery, most patients are able to return home under the care of a friend or family member.

What Implant Size is Right for You?

Dr. Maman discusses his scientific approach to choosing the perfect implant for each patient’s specific size and body type.

Keller Funnel™ Technique for Silicone Breast Implants

The doctors at 740 Park Plastic Surgery often utilize the Keller Funnel™ “No-Touch” technique for silicone implant breast augmentation procedures. The Keller Funnel™ is a unique device designed to place the breast implant without touching the skin in the process, ultimately reducing risk of trauma to the outer shell. Plus, Dr. Maman and Dr. Broumand are also able to gently slide the implant into the breast pocket without ever touching the implant during insertion. By avoiding contact with the patient’s skin during placement, there is less chance of the implant being affected by residual bacteria that lives on our skin. Additionally, our surgeons believe the Keller Funnel™ technique can often lower the risk of capsular contraction (scar tissue forming around the implant, creating a hardened feel), and it may help minimize residual scarring because the procedure can be performed utilizing a smaller incision.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Some bruising, swelling, and numbness in the breasts and nipples can be expected after breast augmentation surgery; however, these effects should fade over the first few weeks. Any discomfort can be managed with medication. Most patients are able to resume normal daily routines after about one week. Your surgeon will advise you not to engage in strenuous activities for several weeks following the breast augmentation procedure.

Have You Considered Breast Augmentation Without Implants?

Our plastic surgeons understand that not every woman interested in enhancing the appearance of her breasts likes the idea implants. For this reason, we offer breast augmentation with fat transfer as an alternative solution. With this innovative technique, Dr. Broumand and Dr. Maman can remove fat tissue from various regions of your own body and transfer it to the breasts until an optimal size and shape is achieved. As an additional benefit, a more slender, toned aesthetic can often be attained in the area(s) from which fat is extracted.
