Breast Implant Options

While there are only two major types of breast implants, the options for size and shape are virtually endless. One thing to remember is that your ultimate decision should be based on your individual goals, as well as what may be best for your body type. Dr. Broumand will meet with you for an initial consultation to go over all aspects of breast augmentation with you and show you the many examples of breast implants that you can choose from. There are saline and silicone implants; round and tear-drop shaped varieties; and a comprehensive array of sizes available. Dr. Broumand will talk with you about your choices and help you visualize the potential results so that you can make the best possible decision.

Breast Implant Types

There are different types of breast implants. They are: Mentor® Saline Breast Implants, Mentor® Silicone Breast Implants, and Sientra® “Gummy Bear” Breast Implants.

Saline Breast Implants

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for patients aged 18 and over, the saline breast implant is the most common type and has helped millions of women achieve their breast enhancement goals. Saline implants are made of a silicone outer shell encasing a saline (salt-water) solution. These implants have been used in breast augmentation procedures for many years, and can provide patients with beautiful results. Dr. Broumand typically uses the prolific Mentor® brand of saline implants; however, we can order Allergan’s saline implants for patients who prefer that particular brand.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants are known for their very natural look and feel. Approved by the FDA for breast augmentation patients over the age of 22 and for breast reconstruction patients of any age, silicone breast implants are composed of a silicone outer shell that is filled with a thick silicone gel. They are typically less prone to rippling, and are often beneficial for patients who have very thin body frames. Dr. Broumand offers a number of silicone breast implant types, including the MemoryGel® implant. The MemoryGel® implant is approved by the FDA for use in cosmetic procedures, and is known for its very natural feel and shape. Our practice most often uses the Mentor® brand of silicone implants; however we can order the Allergan silicone breast implants for patients who prefer that brand.

Sientra® “Gummy Bear” Breast Implants – Smooth, Round, and Textured

For many years, cohesive gel implants (also known as “gummy bear implants”) have been available in Europe and have provided patients with very successful breast augmentation results. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved these advanced implants for use by board-certified plastic surgeons here in the United States. The Sientra® breast implant is composed of a very durable silicone gel that can allow for a remarkably natural appearance and feel. They are also designed to be leak-resistant in the rare case of implant rupture. Sientra® breast implants are available in round, classic, and oval shapes; smooth and textured surfaces; and a variety of sizes. One of the chief benefits of Sientra® breast implants is that they can help to ensure the best possible proportions, in addition to adding volume to the breasts. Specific types of Sientra® implants can provide a more natural-looking blend between the breasts and the chest wall, and the cohesive gel composition of the implant can give them the feeling of natural breast tissue.
